Radical muscle mobilisation in the surgical repair of a unilateral cleft lip.
Abstract
The embryological basis of a unilateral cleft lip is briefly outlined. The hypothetical effects of radical mobilisation of the orbicularis oris in a unilateral cleft lip are postulated. The actual clinical effects of such a mobilisation are noted in four cases. The role that radical muscle mobilisation might play in the surgical repair of a unilateral cleft lip is discussed. The need for a longer follow-up of the patients treated in this way is recognised.
