Quantitative Analysis of Upper Eyelid Volume Changes in East Asian Patients Following Double Eyelid Surgery Using 3-Dimensional Stereophotogrammetry.
Abstract
[OBJECTIVE] Three-dimensional (3D) surface imaging technology has become a valuable method for quantifying the area and volume of periocular structures. This study aimed to assess upper eyelid volume changes in East Asian patients before and after double eyelid surgery using this imaging technique.
[METHODS] A total of 59 eyes (30 left and 29 right) that underwent double eyelid surgery using the buried suture technique were assessed with 3D imaging preoperatively and postoperatively. The association between eyebrow descent and upper eyelid volume changes was analyzed using correlation and regression analyses.
[RESULTS] The mean change in upper eyelid volume was 0.195±0.036 mL, and the mean degree of eyebrow descent was 1.325±0.225 mm. Correlation analysis indicated a positive association between eyebrow descent and upper eyelid volume changes. Regression analysis demonstrated that each 1 mm of eyebrow descent corresponded to an estimated increase of 0.050±0.035 mL in eyelid volume.
[CONCLUSION] Double eyelid surgery using the buried suture technique resulted in an average increase of ∼0.2 mL in upper eyelid volume among East Asian patients. This increase was primarily attributable to associated eyebrow descent.
