Effects of abdominoplasty on intra ocular pressure and optic disc diameter.
Abstract
[PURPOSE] Intra-abdominal pressure increases after abdominoplasty especially with the repair of rectus diastasis. With this increase in pressure, changes in thoracic, abdominal and even cranial pressure are observed in the body. A study was planned to indirectly demonstrate the increase in intracranial pressure after abdominoplasty and rectus diastasis repair.
[MATERIAL METHOD] 20 abdominoplasty patients were included in this study. Intraocular pressure (IOP) and optic disc diameter (ODD) were measured respectively preoperatively, on the first day postoperatively, on the first week postoperatively, and on the first month postoperatively. The extent of repair of rectus diastasis and the distances between both anterior superior iliac spine (ASIS) were measured intraoperatively. It was also noted how much tissue was removed from each patient, whether liposuction was performed and if so, how much, as well as any complications that developed in the patients.
[RESULTS] The mean values for body mass index was 26.46 kg/m2, the weight of tissue excised was 2042.47 g, the rectus plication amount was 5.84 cm. The mean values of ODD for preop, postop., postop. 1 week and postop. 1 month were 5.65, 7.44, 6.78, 5.83 mm respectively. Mean values of IOP for preop, postop., postop. 1 week and postop. 1 month were 15.60 mmHg, 19.55, 17,80, 15.95 respectively.
[CONCLUSION] Optic disc diameter and intraocular pressure increase postoperatively. After the first month of operation, optic nerve diameter and intraocular pressure return to preoperative levels. In addition, agents that may increase intracranial pressure should be avoided in terms of anesthesia.
[LEVEL OF EVIDENCE III] Evidence obtained from well-designed cohort or case-control analytic studies, preferably from more than one center or research group.
